Gum Disease

Gum disease even in severe cases usually does not cause pain so most people are completely unaware that they have gum disease.  Gum disease (infected gums) will cause bleeding gums, bad breath (halitosis), bad taste and eventually loose teeth. An infection anywhere in the body is not good for overall health so elimination of gum disease will contribute to an improvement in general health.

Common Questions

Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?

The main reason gums bleed when brushing and flossing is that they are infected. Gums become infected when plaque builds up around the area where the teeth join the gums.

What is gum disease and how do I prevent it?

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is an infection of the gums and the supporting bone around the roots of teeth. It is caused by the buildup of bacteria (plaque and calculus) around the teeth at gum level.

Prevention involves complete removal of the soft plaque from around and between the teeth by meticulous brushing and flossing daily and by regular professional dentist cleaning of plaque and scale from below the gum level.

What is the correlation between gum disease and heart disease?

Some medical studies have suggested a link between the bacteria associated with gum disease and an increased risk of some types of heart disease.

Your dentist is an expert in preventative care, dental education, and helping every member of your family maintain great oral hygiene for the best possible mouth health.
